Bridging Gaps: Transforming Health Care through Generalist Forensic Health Training
Presented by Angelia Trujillo, DNP, MSN, WHNP-BC, AFN-C, DF-AFN

Join us as we discuss the impact of generalist forensic health care training on Alaska’s health systems. Through the Alaska Comprehensive Forensic Training Academy (ACFTA), over 370 healthcare providers—including nurses, doctors, physician assistants, community health aides, and EMTs—were equipped with trauma-informed and forensic skills to better support violence survivors statewide. The program aimed to overcome gaps in care by promoting evidence-based, culturally responsive practices across diverse settings, moving beyond traditional Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) program limitations.

ACFTA’s modular curriculum blended theory and practical skill-building tailored to each provider role, emphasizing documentation, ethics, inclusivity, and survivor empowerment. Assessment showed improved provider competence and confidence in trauma-informed care, better documentation, and broader collaborative response—especially critical in rural and underserved areas. Insights from town hall meetings and community feedback underscored the demand for mandatory continuing education and culturally competent care for all victims of violence, regardless of background or time elapsed since victimization. ACFTA demonstrates a sustainable, holistic approach, preparing Alaska’s healthcare workforce to deliver compassionate, comprehensive forensic care and support ongoing healing and justice for violence survivors.
