Reminder: Renew your License Online!

Renew your nursing license clock reminder

RNs and APRNs: It’s time to renew your Alaska nursing license! Online license renewal is open for RNs and APRNs and will continue until November 30, 2020.

You must renew your license on or before November 30 in order to continue practice in Alaska. There is no grace period to practice on a lapsed license. It is illegal to work as an RN or APRN without a current license.

All licenses and authorizations expire on November 30 regardless of when first issued, except for new licenses issued within 90 days of the expiration date, which are issued to the next biennium.

On May 6th, the Alaska Board of Nursing made temporary changes to the requirements for maintaining continuing competency, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of contact hours required for the continuing education method has been reduced from 30 hours to 15 hours. The Board also waved the uncompensated professional activities requirement. The 230 hours of nursing employment remains the same for this renewal period. Nurses must complete two out of these three methods for maintaining continuing competency.

Licensees are subject to a random mandatory audit of continuing competency. If you are selected for the audit, you will be notified in writing and given 30 days to submit proof of continuing competency claimed for the licensing period.

You must truthfully answer the renewal application questions. If you are unsure how to answer the questions, contact the Alaska Board of Nursing for assistance prior to submitting your renewal application.

Online license renewal is strongly encouraged. The MY LICENSE online renewal application is available at http://www.nursing.alaska.gov/. In most cases, your license will be renewed immediately.

If you choose to renew by paper application, make sure that your application is complete, including signature, date, and all boxes appropriately checked. Be sure to include the appropriate fees. Due to a heavy volume of renewal activities, processing time for renewal applications received by mail may take up to 4-6 weeks. Happy Renewal Time!
