As a nurse I have learned that change does not happen without standing up for what you believe in and by being a voice to advocate for the patients we care for. As the President of the AaNA, my role is to provide a platform and to advocate for all the nurses in Alaska by bringing the issues that we face in our daily roles and our future battles to the forefront of our organizations and the communities we serve. Through my work with the AaNA Legislative Committee, I have served the nurses of our organization by ensuring that our issues and concerns are being heard by members of the House and Senate; and by supporting legislative bills that will benefit the safety and sustainability of nursing.

My goals include:

  1. Continuing with our role in legislation by supporting safe staffing practices, opposition of the Nurse licensure compact, workplace violence in healthcare, and any other areas of legislation that pertain to nursing and safety for our communities.
  1. Ensuring that our continuing education CEUs and information sessions are sustained and perseverd to provide more educational opportunities for current and future nurses.
  1. Encouraging membership growth by focusing on both union and non-union nurses in hospital and community settings, also expanding our future membership with student nurses throughout the state.
  1. Strengthening our relationships with other healthcare and community organizations to ensure cohesive partnerships for nursing and community issues.
  1. My final goal is to keep with the vision of the AaNA and follow in the footsteps of my predecessors, assuring that the AaNA will continue to be a home for all nurses, a place of acceptance and unity, where all are welcome.

I hope to continue as a director to be involved with the legislators to educate them to make good decisions to support nurses. Statement of Interest

As an AFT-VP, I am honored to serve our National Union, AFT in this position. Supporting our work done locally and at a national level is very rewarding. As staffing legislation is expanding to other states beyond CA & MA (ICU nurse: patient ratios only) we have a fabulous opportunity to raise our voices to help our patients receive the same level of nursing care as in states that have legislation to protect their patients. At the last AFT convention, in Boston 2022 the delegates passed a resolution to have Safe Patient Staffing legislation in at least 5 states by 2024. We are well on our way with the additional legislation in OR, WA and CT. As our state representative on the AFT Healthcare Program and Policy Council, this is an opportunity to guide the work of our division within the AFT. I would be honored to serve as one of your delegates to the AFT convention, 2024 Houston, TX.
